What is EDI?

Digitally receive and process orders.

Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) is a generic term for the electronic exchange of certain business documents, such as orders, bills and certain messages or confirmations. It is part of electronic business, especially in freight transport. Because the relevant documents must comply with certain standard templates, it is mainly used for recurring transactions.
There are a number of EDI standards such as EDIFACT (developed by the United Nations), HL7 (healthcare), TRADACOMS (British supermarkets), VDA and ODETTE (automotive industry). Within logistics, a very large number of transactions take place via EDI. Many large (international) companies require their suppliers to use EDI to exchange orders, packing slips and invoices.
Nowadays, these standards are increasingly being adopted by open standards such as XML.
